![]() ![]() As other reviewers noted, it's a very quiet beach area compared to Dewey, Rehoboth, Ocean City, Virginia Beach, etc. Overall, we love Hatteras as a great inexpensive reunion for college friends. It's very hot and humid, and we saw red-faced people on each landing looking miserable. I wouldn't recommend climbing the lighthouse if you're really out of shape. ![]() The guides are very informative and really eager to share stories about the island and surrounding area. We visited the Hatteras lighthouse last year and really enjoyed the view and the history. We ordered dessert and coffee on principle just to make him wait longer ) Our server was awesome, but a few minutes after he gave us our entrees (before one person had even had a chance to try her meal), the manager came over and tried to clear our plates and said "okay, so no dessert tonight?" We shooed him away, but he returned every 2-3 minutes to encourage us to leave, presumably so that he could flip the table. The she-crab soup and fried scallops were delicious, and the key lime pie was the best ever! Linguini dishes were really heavy on the pasta and light on the seafood, and the fried calamari was tough. The food overall was great but I don't think I'd return because of the horrid manager. We cooked most of our meals at the campsite but satiated our seafood cravings at the Dolphin's Den in Avon. The grocery store had a wide selection of items and, surprisingly, was cheaper then the ones around my house! There was a grocery store and an ABC liquor store just outside the park. We didn't venture off the beach much, but we really enjoyed breakfast at Diamond Shoals restaurant (greasy deliciousness)!! We had mixed reviews on Eddie's (minigolf, coffee shop, and ice cream place right across from the campground entrance) - the coffee and hard-serve ice cream was good, the custard was flavorless, and the service was painfully slow. The signs say fortified wine isn't allowed, but one jerky ranger poured out our regular wine anyway (which makes absolutely no sense as we had WALKED to the beach with one bottle to share amongst six people whereas everyone around us on the beach had one truck per person and cases of beer to drink before driving back, yet we were the ones the cops bothered?.but I digress). To the right is a fishing area, which can be entertaining to watch, but we just spent most of our time lazing in the sun and playing in the perfect temp water.Īt night you can build fires on the beach and beer is allowed, but not hard liquor. The beach stretches as far as you can see in either direction and there were empty stretches of 30+ feet between families/groups - very quiet. There were always spots available, but we usually walked down anyway. The beach is about a five minute walk from the campground and there is a parking area there. We had a group of 20-25 people (friends in their mid-twenties, no children) spread over five sites, and we had plenty of room to space out our 9 tents and still have a sound buffer around us for the neighbors.Įach $20 site is permitted 6 people, 2 cars, and 3 tents, and they are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. ![]() There are no trees on the site, which was a little disconcerting during the thunderstorms our first night.but we all survived! Each large lot comes with a picnic table and grill (campfires are not allowed here). The tent sites are flat without any tree roots or rocks to deal with. It's a very bare-bones campground, but it's close to the beach, has flush toilets and showers (really cold!!!!), and the park rangers are very helpful. I just returned from our second annual (I say 'annual' because we will definitely be returning!) Hatteras beach weekend and had a fantastic time! The drive down from DC on Friday of Memorial Day weekend was wretched and took almost 10 hours, but we were in heaven once we finally arrived.īoth years we've camped at the Cape Point (or something like that) campground in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
